Manual Stacker Safety Guide: Safe Operating Rules

Learn the essential safety rules for operating manual hydraulic stackers, including load centering, braking systems, and operator protection.

The Importance of Safe Operating Practices

Manual hydraulic stackers are robust and reliable lifting machines, but improper operation can lead to tip-overs, lost loads, or operator injury. Because these stackers do not utilize motorized engines, operators must understand the physical forces of balancing and stopping heavy loads manually. Below, we cover the primary safety rules for operating manual stackers.

1. Respect Rated Load Capacities and Load Centers

Never exceed the maximum rated load capacity of your stacker model. Overloading can damage the hydraulic pump or cause the mast to bend:

  • CTY-E10 and CTY-D10: Rated for up to 1000kg.
  • CTY-E20 and CTY-D20: Rated for up to 2000kg.
  • CTY-E30 and CTY-D30: Rated for up to 3000kg.
Additionally, pay attention to the load center distance (typically 550mm for CTY-E models and 500mm for CTY Stretchable Leg models). Placing the load's center of gravity further forward on the forks reduces the lifting capacity and increases the risk of tipping.

2. Use the Integrated Braking System

Standard manual stackers, such as the CTY-E series, are equipped with a mechanical wheel brake design. Always lock the wheel brakes when:

  • The stacker is stationary on a loading dock or warehouse floor.
  • You are raising or lowering forks to stack a pallet.
  • You are loading or unloading items from a raised platform.
Never park a manual stacker on an incline, and do not attempt to stop a moving stacker by suddenly locking the brakes under full load.

3. Operator Protection and Safety Features

Modern manual stackers incorporate physical safety features to protect operators:

  • Protective Wire Mesh Guard: A steel mesh grid is mounted on the mast to shield the operator's hands and face from the moving lifting chains and carriage assembly.
  • Wheel Protection Guards: Enclosed guards near the steering wheels prevent the operator's feet from being caught beneath the rollers.
  • Oil Cylinder Height Limit: Our CTY-E and CTY-D models feature an oil cylinder height limit control, preventing the forks from raising beyond their maximum height limit without the need for manual limit screws.

4. Safe Travel Procedures

When moving the stacker horizontally:

  • Keep the forks lowered as close to the ground as possible (ideally 100mm to 200mm) to maintain a low center of gravity.
  • Never transport a load with the forks raised to high levels, as this makes the stacker highly unstable.
  • Ensure the warehouse floor is clear of debris, electrical cords, and cracks that could stop the polyurethane or nylon wheels suddenly, which could cause the load to fall.

Summary safety checklist

Before starting, verify the load weight does not exceed the model's capacity, lock the wheel brakes when lifting, keep the forks low during horizontal travel, and ensure the protective wire mesh guard is intact. Following these simple practices will keep your operations safe and productive.
